SpaceX has launched its latest batch of Starlink satellites, growing the constellation by another 58 spacecraft just 10 days after its most recent Starlink launch. That brings the total number of operational Starlink broadband internet satellites on orbit to 538. SpaceX also split the payload for this Starlink mission for the first time, giving up two of its usual Starlink payload complement in order to also carry three Planet Skysat spacecraft on behalf of that client.
SpaceX’s latest Starlink launch was significant not only because it brings the company closer to its goal of actually operating a consumer-facing broadband internet service, which it hopes to begin doing for a limited pool of customers in the U.S. and Canada by later this year, but also because these Starlink satellites carried new modifications designed to make them more astronomer-friendly.
Starlink, because of its size and the relatively low-altitude orbit that they traverse, has been criticized by nighttime scientific observers because they present a potentially bright distraction as they pass overhead. SpaceX launched one Starlink satellite equipped with a new deployable sun visor it created that can block reflections of sunlight off of their antenna surfaces, and on this launch, each of the 58 satellites was outfitted with this new mitigating technology.
Hopefully, that means that Starlink can now exist more harmoniously with scientists who rely on Earth-based observation of the stars and night sky, but the ultimately proof will be in what difference these solar visors make when deployed in volume among the Starlink constellation.
This mission was also the first conducted under SpaceX’s formalized SmallSat Rideshare Program, which offers small satellite operators a chance to book a ride aboard an upcoming SpaceX launch in a relatively flexible, ‘on-demand’ manner using a web portal SpaceX created for the purpose. SpaceX’s efforts to offer more value to the rideshare business reflects a recognition that other launch providers like Rocket Lab, which tailor specifically to that market segment, are significant potential competition to its overall bottom line.
The launch today, which occurred at 5:21 AM EDT (2:21 AM PDT) also included a recovery landing of the Falcon 9 first stage booster used to propel the payload to space. This booster also previously flew on two of SpaceX’s Dragon cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station.
Rocket Lab has returned to active launch status from its first launchpad in New Zealand, after the global COVID-19 pandemic temporarily paused its work there. Early this morning, it flew its 12th Electron launch vehicle from its launch site on NZ’s Mahia Peninsula, carrying payloads on behalf of the U.S. National Reconnaisance Office (NRO), NASA, and the University of New South Wales Canberra.
The launch occurred at 1:13 AM EDT (5:13 PM local time) and went off without a hitch. Rocket Lab later confirmed that payload deployment also went exactly to plan once the Electron reached its target orbit.
Rocket Lab has been gearing up for significant expansion of its launch capabilities, with a new launch site in the U.S. on Wallops Island in Virginia. The launch facility is now open, and its first mission had been scheduled to fly earlier this year, but that launch got pushed back in part because of delays resulting from NASA’s efforts to stem the spread of COVID-19 with facility closures and a focus on essential missions.
New Zealand is now fully out of lockdown, however – the country’s fast action and relatively small, dispersed population allowed it to contain cases of COVID-19 fairly quickly, and reduce the infection rate to zero. That’s good news both for Rocket Lab’s existing operation, and for its ongoing work to establish a second launch site at its Mahia facility, which is well underway and could go into operation sometime later this year.
You can now stream with other people on Twitch thanks to a feature called Squad Stream. This allows up to four Twitch streamers to broadcast live together. Streamers get to collaborate, and viewers get to see multiple angles of the games being played.
Squad Stream lets Twitch streamers go live together for the first time. Up to four streamers can broadcast live together in one window, sharing their viewers. Streamers can either start a Squad Stream or join an existing one from the Twitch dashboard.
Squad Stream has several benefits. It will help streamers foster new communities who all enjoy watching the same Twitch creators, enable popular streamers to help smaller streamers find an audience, and add an extra element (or three) for viewers.
If you’re a Twitch streamer keen to start a Squad Stream, go to your Creator Dashboard and open your Stream Manager. Then click the Quick Actions panel and find Squad Stream. You’ll see My Squad (to start a Squad Stream) and Invites (to accept an invite to one).
To start a Squad Stream, click Add a Channel and type the name of the Twitch channel you would like to invite. You can invite between one and three other channels. Once all of the channels have accepted your invites, click Start Squad Stream to begin.
The next way to watch and play together is now on Twitch.

If you’re a Twitch viewer keen to watch a Squad Stream, you just need to look for the “Squad Stream” tag when browsing. Once you find one, you can watch a Squad Stream, and click on each channel in turn to place them in the primary slot.
Squad Stream is currently only available to Partners. However, Twitch plans to offer the feature to Affiliates and then all streamers over time. This is due to “the need for video quality options,” which only Partners currently receive by default.
In a nutshell, video quality options (or transcodes) enable Twitch to adjust the streams in certain slots. Without this option, Twitch would try to deliver four 720p+ streams at once. Twitch goes into more detail in a post on the Twitch Blog all about Squad Stream.
Twitch already offers a couple of ways for streamers to help each other out. There’s Host mode, which allows one Twitch streamer to host another channel’s live broadcast. And Raids, which allows one Twitch streamer to send their viewers to another channel.
Twitch streamers have actually been collaborating in this way for a while now using tools like MultiTwitch. However, Squad Stream should make the practice more popular. In the meantime, you should read our tips for building a live streaming audience.

You can then track your fasting hours, set reminders to begin and end the fast, and record all activity to see it in charts and graphs. It also syncs with Google Fit to track your weight loss and physical activity.
Fasting App is especially great for newcomers to IF. You’ll get a quick explanation of what your body is going through at any stage, corresponding to how many hours you have been fasting. The “Learn” tab has further information you might want to know about IF, with frequently asked questions like what you can and can’t eat. You’re getting it all in your app, without having to go search for it on the internet.
No features are behind a paywall in this app. However, it is ad-supported and those ads can get annoying after a while. If you like the app, it’ll be worth the $4 to stop the ads.

Zero is the most popular app for intermittent fasting on the internet. It includes most of the features in the aforementioned Fasting App and has a smooth interface that’s easy for newcomers to get into. With badges and Google Fit data, Zero adds more gamification to the experience of intermittent fasting.
Apart from those features, Zero includes a journal to track how you’re feeling while on the diet. Mood tracking has shown to be an effective way to deal with retraining your mind, which is an integral part of intermittent fasting. You can simply track mood with emojis, or add notes to track deeper thoughts.
The app also has a robust “Learn” section where it regularly adds new videos made by its team of in-house medical officers. But many of these are behind a paywall, as are other features of the app. For example, you can’t set a custom IF plan in the free version. Get Zero if you plan to soon pay and upgrade to Zero Plus, but otherwise, Fasting App is a better tracker.

SSH (Secure Shell) is an encrypted network protocol used for connecting to devices over a network or the internet. Linux computers come with a preinstalled SSH tool that can be accessed with a terminal command, but what about Windows?
Several SSH options are available for Windows, including a built-in SSH tool. Here’s how to use SSH in Windows using native and third-party apps.
SSH is the de facto solution for securely accessing remote terminals on Linux and other UNIX-like systems. If you have a remote SSH server you want to access, you need an SSH client. SSH can be used for anything from remotely accessing a computer on your network to managing and backing up a website.
While Windows has long included the Telnet client, it is extremely insecure— so you should only use it between directly connected devices. For safe, secure, encrypted SSH, you need better software. Five tools are available for SSH in Windows:

PuTTY is the most popular app for connecting to SSH servers on Windows. PuTTY’s interface may seem a bit intimidating and complicated at first, but it’s fairly simple once you start using it.
To use PuTTY, all you really need to do is launch putty.exe. Here, enter the hostname (or IP address) of the remote server, ensure the port is correct, and click Open. PuTTY will connect to the server and prompt you for a username and password.
You can also save this session information if you like. Click the Default Settings option then click on Save and PuTTY will use your saved settings every time it opens.
Alternatively, set a different profile for each connection, input a name in the Saved Sessions field and click Save.

If you want a Microsoft-built Windows command line SSH tool that is built into the operating system, you’re in luck.
Windows PowerShell has slowly been taking over from the Windows Command Prompt app since it was introduced in Windows 7. More recently, support for OpenSSH has been added, which you can incorporate in PowerShell as follows:
With OpenSSH added, you can use it by opening Windows PowerShell (right-click Start > PowerShell) and typing a connection command. For example:
ssh username@192.1.1.10You’ll be prompted for your password, so enter this and agree to the security certificate.
Google provides an SSH client called Secure Shell App, that can be added to the Chrome browser. Just install the Secure Shell app from the Chrome Web store. Although it runs in the Chrome browser, it runs completely offline so you don’t need internet access to use it. So it works as well with devices on your local network as it does with remote servers.
Secure Shell App opens as a browser tab. Simply enter your credentials and the hostname (IP address) of the remote SSH server. You can also append additional SSH command-line arguments, if necessary.
As with other Chrome web apps, the Secure Shell App can open in a dedicated window to separate it from your main browser.
As Secure Shell is a Chrome web app, it’s also available for macOS, Linux, and even Chrome OS.

If you’re routinely using the standard SSH command on Linux, macOS, and other UNIX-like systems, Cygwin features SSH support.
If you’re new to SSH, you’ll probably want to use a graphical option like PuTTY. However, if you’re experienced with command line activity, you’ll find Cygwin’s OpenSSH implantation works as it does on other platforms.
Cygwin is a large installation package so you may prefer to install just OpenSSH.
To do this, run the downloaded installer and when you’re prompted to Select Packages, search for OpenSSH. Expand Net and in the New column, click Skip so it displays the version to download.
Click Next to proceed, review the packages to be installed, then Next again.
After the installation process finishes, launch Cygwin’s Terminal application from the Start menu. To start an SSH connection, use the same ssh command that you’d run on Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems.
While a good solution, Cygwin can be difficult to set up.

Often the main reason to use SSH to communicate to a remote device is to upload files. Commonly, this is because you’re managing a web server and want to upload a web application (e.g. WordPress).
FileZilla is an open source FTP (File Transfer Protocol) tool that has support for SFTP or SSH File Transfer Protocol. Obviously, this makes FTP transfers far more secure.
