While attending college is primarily about education, it also represents teenagers being free for the first time. They may drink, they may smoke, they may do other things that they’ll regret later in life. And they’ll definitely go on a few dates.
Tinder is keen to help students score more dates, so it has launched Tinder U to separate college kids from the rest of us. And with 18- to 24-year-olds already making up over half of Tinder’s userbase, appealing directly to students makes sense.
Tinder U Lets Students Date Other Students
Tinder U is essentially a feature within the main Tinder app. Just one that’s only available to kids attending college. Students will be able to switch between using Tinder and Tinder U, with the latter only matching you with other students in the area.
To sign up for Tinder U, you need to be located on campus, and provide Tinder with your .edu email address. You’ll then receive an invitation via email which you’ll need to click in order to verify your eligibility.

Tinder suggests several reasons to use Tinder U, saying, “Need a study buddy? Not a problem. Coffee date on the quad? We’ve got you covered. Freshman year and you don’t know a soul? This is your ticket to the coolest crowd on campus.” But we suspect most students will use Tinder U for more obvious reasons.
While announcing Tinder U during its quarterly earnings call, Match Group CEO Mandy Ginsberg said:
“We believe it is critical that Tinder maintains a strong foothold at universities around the globe, especially given that every 18-year-old who starts college is building a social life from scratch making new friends and starting new relationships.”
Tinder U is currently rolling out to iOS users at “4-year, accredited, not-for-profit schools in the U.S. that deliver courses in a traditional face-to-face learning format.” However, we assume its availability will be expanded over time.
Separating College Kids From Everyone Else
With so many students already using Tinder to score more dates, Tinder U was a natural next step. It allows students to segregate themselves off from the rest of the world, and only date other people attending the same school or schools nearby.
If you’re already using Tinder you should beware of these Tinder scams, avoid making these common Tinder mistakes, and educate yourself about staying safe after matching on Tinder. But remember, Tinder isn’t just for hooking up!
